The PMP from the Project Management Institute is the credential Saudi project-management adverts ask for most often, and it is also the most misunderstood. The common mistake is to start studying before confirming you are eligible to apply at all.
The two requirements that cannot be waived
PMI asks for both of these, not one:
- Documented project-leadership experience. Thirty-six months for a holder of a four-year degree; sixty months for a secondary-school or diploma holder.
- Thirty-five contact hours of accredited project-management education. These are satisfied by an accredited preparation programme, and they are a separate requirement with no substitute.
How "months of project leadership" are counted
This is where most of the confusion sits. You do not need the job title "project manager". You need to have led or directed work on something with a beginning, an end and a defined scope. Leading a team through a new system rollout, running a branch opening, overseeing delivery of a contract phase — all of it counts.
Repetitive operational work with no start and no finish — running an existing service, say — does not count however long it ran. And overlapping months count once: two projects in the same month is one month, not two.
The mistakes applications get rejected for
- Describing the role in general terms — "participated in projects" — instead of what you specifically led.
- Overlapping dates that add up to more months than actually elapsed.
- Listing operational work as project experience.
- Naming a contact who cannot be reached to verify, when the application may be selected for random audit.
Preparing for the exam starts with the application file, not with the book.
And if the months are not there yet
That is an ordinary position and not a reason to stop. You can start on a track that builds the same experience you will later document — risk management, business analysis, or the project management office — and then apply for the PMP with the box that was rejecting you now filled.
