The PMP exam is the step that comes after the Project Management Institute (PMI) accepts your application, and most people who look it up want the same answers: how many questions, how long, whether it can be taken online, what it costs and how to book it. The short version: 180 questions in 240 minutes with two breaks, offered in Arabic, taken at a test centre or online, and booked only once your application is approved and the fee is paid.
The PMP exam at a glance: questions, time and languages
The exam has 180 questions: 170 scored and 10 pretest questions PMI uses to trial items for future exams. They are placed at random, so you cannot tell which ones do not count. You have 240 minutes — four hours — with two 10-minute breaks. An optional tutorial before the exam and an optional survey after it are not taken out of those 240 minutes.
The exam is offered in fifteen languages, Arabic among them. In a translated exam the questions appear in your chosen language, and each question has a button that shows the English text if you want to check a term. The language is set when you book: PMI cannot change the language of an existing appointment, so if you booked in English and want Arabic, you have to cancel first.
PMP exam domains: what it actually measures
The Examination Content Outline splits the questions across three domains:
- People: 33% of the questions — leading the team, working with stakeholders, resolving conflict.
- Process: 41% — planning and controlling scope, schedule, cost, resources and risk.
- Business Environment: 26% — tying the project to organisational goals, compliance and change.
More important than the domains is the style. The exam puts you in a working situation and asks what you do first or next; it does not ask for definitions. The outline says roughly 40% of the items reflect predictive (traditional) approaches and the other 60% are split between agile and hybrid. Study only the traditional approach and you leave more than half the exam unprepared.
PMP exam question types in the 2026 version
The July 2026 version added two new question types. The outline lists them all:
- Case or scenario (new): a detailed description of a project, a business or a decision, sometimes with charts, followed by a set of questions on it.
- Graphic-based questions (new): you read a chart, diagram or image, then answer.
- Multiple choice with one correct answer.
- Multiple response, with more than one correct answer.
- Matching, pull-down lists and point and click on an image — the outline lists these three for test-centre exams only.
The order of the exam and the two breaks
The exam opens with the case-study section, then the first break, then the independent questions, with the second break about halfway through them. The rule that catches people out: once you review your answers and start a break, you cannot go back to the previous section. Review what you flagged before you press the break button, not after.
How to book the PMP exam, step by step
You cannot book before you qualify. The experience and training requirements are in our article on PMP eligibility; after that, the steps in PMI's handbook are:
- Your application is approved on PMI's website. It may be picked for audit, in which case PMI asks for a copy of your degree, your supervisors' signatures on your experience and certificates for your training hours. You get 90 days to send them, and the audit then takes about 5–7 business days.
- You pay the exam fee. PMI then emails your PMI Eligibility ID; you cannot book without it.
- You book the appointment with Pearson VUE, through the link PMI sends or from your PMI dashboard: at a test centre, which PMI recommends, or online.
- You sit the exam within a year. The eligibility period is one year from approval, or from the day you are told you passed the audit if you were selected.
Your name and your ID
Your name on exam day must match the eligibility letter exactly. You need a current government-issued ID with your photo, your signature and Roman characters or an official English translation; the handbook accepts an ID in its local script if you test in the country that issued it. If your name needs correcting, ask early: PMI cannot guarantee a change within five business days of the exam.
Taking the PMP exam online or at a test centre
Both are available, and PMI recommends the test centre. Before you choose to take the PMP exam online, know what it asks of you:
- A system test on your computer before the day, and a private room nobody walks into.
- Identity verification before you can book, and another check when the exam starts. Fail the pre-booking check and you are sent to book at a test centre; a refund requested after that carries a US$100 administrative fee.
- The proctor may ask to see your ID after each break.
One difference people miss: the outline lists matching, pull-down and point-and-click questions for test-centre exams only, so the two experiences are not identical. Practise in the format you will sit. Test centre locations are on Pearson VUE's PMI page.
PMP exam cost in Saudi Arabia: what you pay and when
We do not quote an exam fee here, because PMI does not publish a single figure: its handbook says prices vary by membership status and region, and that the member rate applies only to people who joined before paying for the certification. If you plan to become a member, join first and pay second. The price that applies to you is shown at checkout in your PMI account.
What the handbook does state:
- Rescheduling or cancelling within 30 days of the appointment: a US$70 fee plus taxes.
- Within 48 hours of the appointment: no changes are possible, and a no-show forfeits the whole fee and pays it again for a new appointment.
- Retakes after a fail carry a fee for the second and third attempts.
- Refunds are possible within 30 days of purchase, provided you have not booked and sat the exam in that time; the application is then closed.
If your decision depends on being reimbursed, read our article on HRDF support for professional certificates before you pay.
After the PMP exam: your result and retakes
When you finish a computer-based exam you see a preliminary result, and the official report reaches PMI's results system within 10 business days at most. The report goes beyond pass or fail: it rates your performance in each domain, which is useful if you have to sit it again.
The handbook gives no fixed pass percentage. The exam is measured against the standard of a qualified project manager, and the passing score is set by psychometric analysis of the scored items. If you do not pass, you have three attempts within your eligibility year. After a third attempt you wait one year from that date before reapplying; if the year simply runs out before you pass, you reapply with no waiting period.
How to prepare for the PMP exam
Start with the Examination Content Outline itself — it lists the tasks in each domain that the questions are built on — and try the sample questions on PMI's certification page to get a feel for "what do you do first". Then practise full exams against the clock, because four hours of focus is a skill you build before exam day. If you want structured preparation with a trainer, the details are on our PMP programme page.
